Maps of Perception – Water
In 2008 I started a project focused on hand drawn maps. I am fascinated by perception, and how personal background and geography shape what we know and how we convey our experiences. I’ve conducted a number of perception mapping exercises, collecting maps from people around the world via Amazon Mechanical Turk, and have decided to … Maps of Perception – Water
Gesture Board: Tomo
Why is skateboard grip always additive? With Tomo I routed three different topographic depths into the surface of the deck. The end result is map that functions as a grip. I’m excited for the next attempt at this technique. I’d like to do some known topographies and experiment in using plyboo as the base material. Tomo is made of plywood, hand-routed and hand painted with Gouache.
Identity
What is the meaning of identity? Do credit and debit cards contain our identities? I collected text and hand-drawn responses on a range of questions related to identity from people around the world via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Their answers are presented on a large board that asks the visitor to swipe his or her credit … Identity
BB Controller
Data data everywhere! We’re often presented with visualizations that highlight data that the graph author wants us to see. In this project, I explore data presentation through the construction of a user-driven controller. Rotate the controller in space and copper BBs connect various circuits. The user and randomness vie for control. Quasi-random, user-driven, data presentation … BB Controller
Walkabout
Walkabout is a mobile phone application that aggregates your steps and movement into change-making behavior. It allows you to take advantage of the time that you do have – in between classes and work, and count and accumulate the steps you take towards a personal goal, competitive goal, or a good cause. This is a … Walkabout
tanBoard
Whiteboards are great for rough sketching of ideas, but they make it hard to move ideas around. Sticky notes are well suited for resorting ideas, but use large amounts of paper and often lose their stick-value if needed for longer projects. I created tanBoard to explore a hybrid concept. TanBoard is a magnet board with … tanBoard
Method Cards to Map the Masses
I made this set of method cards based on my emergent design work. This is a collected toolset that I developed in order to glean rich insights from mass numbers of people. The methods are divided into populaters (to find the boundaries of the problem), catalysts (to spark generative responses), and filters (to select specific areas to move forward).
